Arias
for
Tuba or Bass Trombone
Arias for Tuba or Bass Trombone is a collection of
25 arias from major operas and oratorios by G. F. Handel, F. J.
Haydn, G. Meyerbeer, W. A. Mozart, G. Verdi, and A. Vivaldi. The
arias have been kept in their original form as much as possible.
This collection does not come with piano accompaniment. It is
intended to be used for mastering legato playing and good breath
control, and is therefore laid out in book form as 25 etudes. The
collection also progresses in difficulty within itself, meaning
that each study is slightly more difficult than the one before
it.
Arias for Tuba or Bass Trombone was very popular at the US
Army Band Tub-Euphonium conference in Washington DC in January,
2000 as well as the International Trombone Association's
conference in Potsdam, NY in June, 1999. We give a special
thanks to everyone who was willing to discuss this collection with
Jan at the Puna display table.
Tubists found the book interesting because it would encourage one
to play lightly, (we are dealing with Mozart) rather than
forcefully and loudly, as one must often do when practicing
excerpts.
Private teachers of tuba and bass trombone also noticed the
lengths of the phrases. They said the phrases were a good length
for high school and college level students to develop good breath
control. The ranges were especially appreciated by bass trombone
teachers. Some noted that the Borgdoni/Rochut trombone legato
studies (played an octave lower) were too difficult for the bass
trombone student and that the Arias would be a good
prerequisite to those books.
Professional bass trombonists and tenor trombone doublers
commented that "it was about time" that a book like this was
finally available. Many had already gone through the
Borgdoni/Rochut and the Ostrander studies, are were really looking
forward to playing something refreshingly new just for their own
enjoyment.
